Humans have long respected land, environment, and nature in North America. This dates long before any European settlers set foot on the continent. However, the past century required significant effort to maintain environmental respect in the midst of industry and scientific discovery.
The recent “environmental awakening” became prominent in the 1960s which was mirrored by legislative efforts in the early 1970s. Many key moments paved the way for environmentally conscious traits of the modern United States. Referencing history reminds us to keep working as a society to protect, understand and live harmoniously with the environment.
It’s important to understand that legislative changes come in response to societal concerns. Books such as “Silent Spring” teach millions of people that nature is vulnerable to human intervention. As a result, many environmental protections were granted in the following decades. Looking forward, international figures such as Greta Thunberg could set the foundation for even more positive change.
Each action brings the U.S. closer to environmental unity, but the country should not be satisfied. Looming climate change is present each day while many species lose their habitat, and there is much more that can be done. The next century will likely introduce new pieces of legislation, literature, inspiring figures, and perhaps nationally recognized holidays. Perhaps every day could be treated with as much environmental care as Earth Day.
